Among many things, your energy levels naturally decrease as you age. But the slide can be stalled. It is a matter of doing a few small things to prevent your energy levels from declining faster than normal.
- Keep moving, which is not just about aerobic exercise
- Eat healthy, using food to fuel your body and mind
- Maintain nutrient levels, such as vitamin D
- Discuss medication side effects with your provider
- Get plenty of sleep
- Stay engaged with family, friends, and social activities
- Drink plenty of water
- If you smoke, quit
While you may think that a decline in energy levels can’t be helped as you age, it’s important to remember that energy levels are tied to many things, including hormone levels, mental health, and cardiovascular disease. All of these elements interact, and can present themselves as depression in an individual who isn’t doing things to counter the effects of aging. However, in a person with a healthy outlook, this can actually compound energy levels and increase a positive outlook. It’s circular, so to speak.
If all of this seems too daunting (which surely isn’t energizing!), think of it as small steps to take, one at a time. For example, you could combine both the need for more vitamin D and physical activity by walking outside, either in your community or at a local park. Or perhaps a visit with your primary care provider will help you formulate a nutrition plan, based on lab results and a review of your current medications.
Sometimes, a decline in energy levels can be a sign of a bigger issue. It can often be overlooked because the assumption has always been that the older you get, the more tired you will be. A condition called Anergia could be the culprit though. Anergia is usually a combination of health problems and lifestyle choices. This condition can mask hidden health problems, such as heart and kidney dysfunctions, lung disease, anemia, and depression. So if you feel that your fatigue levels are lower than what you would consider normal, and the suggestions above aren’t helping, schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.
