Louisville is home to quite a few major players in the healthcare industry, including Humana, Kindred Healthcare, Trilogy Health Services, Atria Senior Living, BrightSpring Health Services, Norton Healthcare, Baptist Health, Passport Health Plan, Signature Healthcare, Anthem, Hosparus Health, and Apellis Pharmaceuticals, to name a few. They service varying niches under the larger healthcare umbrella, such as insurance, home-based care, hospice, pharmaceuticals, rehabilitation, senior living, and skilled nursing facilities. This puts Louisville in a fantastic position to become known as the hub of senior healthcare knowledge, experience, and innovation. But everyone with something at stake in Louisville still has work to do.
Kent Oyler, CEO of Greater Louisville Inc. (GLI) (otherwise known as the local chamber of commerce), is confident that Louisville’s largest industry can positively affect important changes in the healthcare landscape if everyone works together to make it happen. Considering the old adage, ‘two heads are better than one,’ collaboration is key. Leaders from all of the above-mentioned corporations, as well as city leaders, have been working on ways to come together so that Louisville can benefit from their collective talents and influence. One organization born of this idea is the Louisville Healthcare CEO Council (LHCC). The LHCC was launched in 2017 to further the progress of aging innovation, a term coined to encompass new ideas, discoveries, products, and services that help the senior population live longer, happier, healthier lives.
Baby boomers account for 40% of total consumer spending and 70% of their income is considered disposable income. Boomers are the largest consumer demographic when it comes to healthcare spending specifically. It’s up to the healthcare industry to create what their biggest customer base already demands.
Another key element that the city has going for it is entrepreneurial support. Organizations such as the Louisville Entrepreneurship Acceleration Partnership (LEAP), help entrepreneurs jumpstart ideas that benefit the aging-care initiative. LEAP is a collaborative effort that helps leverage Louisville’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, including its dominance in the healthcare sector, for significant national impact.
Working collaboratively, Louisvillians across all industries benefit from the city securing a reputation as a healthcare/aging innovator. A successful campaign pours money, jobs, education, and culture into our community.
