Keeping in Touch with Your Elderly Loved Ones

As we work from home and are staying inside, our elderly loved ones and family members are all missing each other. For our elderly loved ones in facilities, they are especially lonely without visitors or being able to leave. There are several ways though we can keep in touch and stay connected.

Video Chats

The best way to see each others’ faces and hear their voices is through video chats! Zoom, Google Hangouts, and GotoMeeting are a few great video chat platforms where multiple family members can chat and talk to our elderly family members. While elderly members may not be tech-savvy, asking them which one they would feel comfortable with can be a good starting point. If they have smart phones then maybe Facetime is the best option, also.

Sending Mail/Gifts

Since everyone is quarantined, we have this time to write hand-written personal letters, notes, and pictures to our elderly members now. We can also look up and find things that bring them joy such as old photos, kids’ drawings, and holiday cards.

  • Sending a “paper hug” with a kids’ arms stretched out
  • Puzzles
  • Card games
  • Flowers
  • Calendars
  • Giftcards

Book Clubs

Invite your loved one into a virtual book club with your friends or family members. You can even join online group discussions with people around the world helping your loved ones feel more connected to the world. If you are a reader, consider creating a friendly book club to stay connected!

Watch Live Concerts Online

Enjoy free live broadcasts of the symphony from the comfort of your own home. More and more people are finding comfort through sharing things online and the world’s musical stars are no different. Musicians and artists around the world are sharing music in the form of live concerts on Facebook and other platforms. Staying connected through music from your favorite artists is one way to help with the unknowns that Covid-19 brings.

Stay Connected

Finding ways to stay connected with others during the coronavirus can be more challenging as an aging adult. Try using these strategies to help our seniors feel less isolated and more connected with loved ones and others around the world.
