Remembering Those Who Served With Senior Loved Ones

Memorial Day weekend is a weekend to remember all of the sacrifices of those who came before us. According to the 2012 U.S. Census brief, “Veterans age 65 or older numbered in excess of 12.4 million. These Veterans served in conflicts around the world including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and even in the Persian Gulf War.” This weekend we would normally gather with our families to celebrate veterans, honor those who served, and take time remembering those who served with senior loved ones. But because of this year’s circumstances things might be a little different due to Covid-19 and the need for social distancing.

ElderCare 4 Families knows better than anyone how much Memorial Day means to so many of our loving senior clients. If you have an elderly loved one in your life, there are many ways you can share Memorial Day with them even from a distance.

Remembering From A Distance

  • Look through old photographs and allow them to talk about some of the old memories they have from younger times. Memorial Day is a day for remembrance – remembering is important to seniors because it helps with overall quality of life.
  • Facetime your loving senior while paying your respects at a fallens grave. If your loved one has lost someone close to them in the line of service, Memorial Day is the perfect weekend to pay your respects. If your loved one cannot physically make it to the grave you can do it for them! Take a token of remembrance for them and Facetime from the grave so they can share in the moment.
  • You can raise the flag together. Raising the flag can be a very powerful way to remember those who have fallen for us.  If your loved one has limited mobility they can easily watch from the window as you raise the flag to honor those who have served across this great country.
  • Chalking driveways has become a great way to communicate with your neighbors through Covid-19. Chalking the driveway of your Elderly loved one who has served is another great way to say thank you and honor them for their service and it’s a great way to get your kids involved and get off screen time!

These are just some of the Memorial Day activities that work well with elder care and the difficulties that Covid-19 brings. We encourage you to get creative and  think up other ways to remember with your seniors. However you spend your Memorial Day weekend, take the time to remember and thank those who have served.
