While technology use is on a steady incline due to Covid-19, it’s especially on the rise among seniors who are trying to stay connected to family members and the outside world. In a recent study by medalerthelp.org, “Internet usage by elderly adults, age 65+, was 14% in 2000. It’s 67% today and 82% if you combine baby boomers. Internet usage is high with seniors but trust factor is low. Only 33% believe the Internet is the most trusted source for news and other types of information.” We know that using the internet and technology can be extremely daunting for our elderly family members. So, we put together a few simple technology tips for seniors to become more comfortable browsing the web.
Install AntiVirus Software
Most computers come with an antivirus software installed, but if you don’t already have one installed, you might consider downloading it before your next internet browsing session. There are many FREE softwares available so you don’t have to buy anything. Antivirus software is designed to protect your computer from outside invaders like hackers or malicious viruses. Aside from updating the software, there is little to no maintenance after it’s initial download. When The Antivirus software needs updated you will get a notification and it will walk you through the process. Antivirus software allows you to browse online feeling secure.
Create A Strong Password
It is important when creating a password to make it’s unique so that only you know and can remember what it is. Remember to use special characters and symbols, and consider using longer words strung together. It is important to remember not to share or send your password information by email, phone, or social media. Make sure to write your password down in a book of important information so you don’t misplace it and can reference it easily in the future.
Email Stranger Danger
Unfortunately when it comes to the world wide web, if something looks or sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Responding to an email from a stranger or one that looks unfamiliar is never a good idea especially for a senior with very limited internet knowledge. If you respond to an email or even open it, you are giving them the green light that your email address is live and active making you a target of their latest scam. If you get an email from someone you don’t know or an email from someone you do know with an unusual subject line, DELETE the email. Don’t even open it.
Attachments & Downloads
If you have received an email with a link to click or an email with a download attachment, make sure you confirm the identity of the sender before opening the attachment or download. If you don’t know the person who sent you the email YOU SHOULD NOT open it! This could be a scam or virus. If the email came from someone you know, it is likely safe to open the link or attachment. We still recommend that you ignore any email or attachment you were not expecting.
